Letter to the editor: Dead man's curve on Veterans Bridge
Anybody riding a motorcycle knows that, once you lean into a curve, it’s difficult to renegotiate. You either brake or stand it up and pray you don’t crash.
My first time entering the Veterans Bridge on-ramp when it first opened, I caught myself heading for the Jersey barrier. I braked and almost hit the wall with Route 28 down below. I was lucky that day, and it surprised me. I wasn’t much over the speed limit, but, instantly, I knew this wasn’t built right. Over the years, there were precautionary measures like fences, signals and “slow down” signs; evidently it was known there was a problem with the ramp.
On May 10, a young man from Florida died when he hit the barrier and flew over, landing on Route 28 below. He wasn’t the first one to do it. I’m sorry for the family of that young man that I didn’t write this sooner. I’m sure he wasn’t aware of the “dead man’s curve” on the bridge.
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and maybe that could help others. I don’t think it was solely this young man’s fault. My sympathy.
