Letter to the editor: CORES group should focus on real issues

Tribune-Review

The article about the Communities Organizing for Racial Equality in the Schools (CORES) caught my attention because of my recent interest in school board meetings in my home district (“Group seeks racial equality at Greensburg Salem, decries school director’s Facebook post,” April 16, TribLIVE). Although I am not a resident of the Greensburg Salem School District, I am finding many flaws in the logic of this group.

One individual is upset about the school board president’s Facebook post joking about Kyle Rittenhouse, a white male who was acquitted of shooting three white men. A group of his peers found Rittenhouse “not guilty by reason of self-defense” after a group of people chased him down and assaulted him during the Kenosha, Wis., riots.

Another CORES member spoke about the recent decision to label winter break “Christmas break” and spring break “Easter break.” I’m sure this decision was made because the planning over when to have these breaks centers over those two holidays. If the school did not provide a break at these times, there would be little to no attendance from the students. I would be willing to bet that most non-Christian students and their families celebrate a secular form of these holidays.

It seems to me that the CORES group needs to focus on true racial issues, rather than getting sidelined on these tangents.
