Letter to the editor: Congress must act on climate change now

Climate change is one of my generation’s biggest problems to fix in the coming years. As wildfires ravage the West, heat waves decimate Europe and flooding becomes commonplace in Pennsylvania, we need to act urgently to limit greenhouse emissions.

The recent West Virginia v. EPA Supreme Court decision severely limited the EPA’s ability to limit carbon emissions. This means that it’s up to lawmakers to pass legislation to to combat climate change.

President Biden and Congress need to pass bipartisan legislation to accelerate investment in clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and make homes and vehicles more energy efficient. To prevent the worst impacts of climate change, Congress has to act now and fight for these large-scale climate investments. In addition to helping build a cleaner, healthier country, investing in climate change will boost the economy by creating a large clean energy sector.

It is urgent that Congress pass the Senate Democrats’ $370 billion climate and energy bill to make the ambitious and necessary investments needed to tackle the climate crisis, achieve true environmental justice and accelerate the transition to clean energy.
