Letter to the editor: Congress members don't need luxury trips

Tribune-Review

It was recently revealed that members of Congress enjoyed $6.6 million in free travel paid for by special interst groups, with destinations in more than 40 foreign countries and U.S. cities. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took his mom on a trip to Israel at a cost of $26,847. Both parties had tabs picked up by some of the most active lobbying groups.

So, while Americans barely afford gas and groceries, and suffer from high inflation and diminishing bank accounts, Momma, Aunt Sue, brother Johnny or a BFF can luxuriate in first-class accommodations courtesy of groups who may or may not have the average American’s best interests in mind.

Foreign and domestic relations are very important to America; however, making these trips family, expense-paid luxury vacations is a real slap in the face to those who hardly can afford to fill their tank with gas. Total trips last year were quoted at 1,785, double and triple 2021 and 2020, the coronavirus years, which is rather ironic in a struggling economy. Could this be why the cost of most goods has escalated?

I’m wondering how many of these trips are a necessity or a matter of having a unique experience. I’m guessing those of us never diving into political office will never know.
