Letter to the editor: Biden moving backwards on immigration efforts
Letter-writer John Meyer (“The border is not ‘open,’ ” March 20, TribLIVE) states “this administration has maintained the border policies of the previous administration.” This is false.
President Biden, in his first hours in office, signed numerous immigration-related executive orders and administration policy changes, one of which was to end the Trump administration’s use of federal funding for building the border wall and stopping its construction. When the 2006 Secure Fence Act, which included “physical infrastructure enhancements to prevent unlawful border entry,” passed the Senate with broad bipartisan support, then-Sen. Biden voted in favor.
With his actions, he is subverting the will of Congress.
Biden’s omnibus spending bill cuts border security by half a billion dollars from last year, even as illegal crossings continue to spike. In February 2022, illegal immigrant apprehensions along the U.S.-Mexico border increased 6.6% over January. They increased 350% over February 2021, just after Biden took office.
One other matter, the Western Journal notes that the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been “overwhelmed for months with illegal aliens bused in from the southern border … as many as 300 to 400 … arriving every day.”
Perhaps Mr. Meyer needs to do a little more research on this matter.
