Letter to the editor: Be aware of warning signs of strokes
May is Stroke Awareness Month, and I want to take this opportunity to urge everyone to learn more about this serious health issue.
Every year, strokes affect millions of people around the world, causing long-term disability, loss of independence and even death. The good news is that most strokes can be prevented or treated if detected early. That’s why it’s crucial to know the warning signs of a stroke and what to do in case of an emergency.
The signs of a stroke can be remembered using the acronym BE FAST:
B — Balance loss
E — Eyesight changes
F — Face drooping
A — Arm weakness
S — Speech difficulty
T — Time to call 911
If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t wait to seek medical attention. Call 911 immediately and get to the hospital as quickly as possible.
In addition to knowing the warning signs, it’s also important to take steps to reduce your risk of stroke. This includes maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, not smoking and managing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.
As we mark Stroke Awareness Month, let’s all commit to learning more about this important issue and taking action to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the devastating effects of stroke.
