A generation ago, I had great hopes for the world following the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. The nations there seemed on the road to prosperity and freedom for their people. Many of us (including me) went to teach modern manufacturing and management principles. It seemed socialism and communism could be laid on the ash heap of history forever. I lived among people in Romania for months at a time in the early 1990s. They had very little; their main meal of the day was lunch at the company’s cafeteria, and many wore rather shabby clothes.
But now they had a glimmer in their eyes that their children would one day have a better life.
Today, progressive Americans see China, with its authoritarian and administrative form of government, as the new model for the nations of the world. Those in power there ignore the needs and yearning of their people in their quest for world dominance. It’s the same old communist system, but wearing new clothes — the powerful few will live extremely well, but common people live in poverty and are crushed if they raise hand or voice to object. It’s now happening here.
Is this what so many brave Americans fought and died for? Is this really the America we want for our children and future generations?
