Jody Boulay: Romance during recovery
Valentine’s Day can be challenging for people in early recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.
Most health professionals recommend that people in early recovery wait a year before pursuing a new relationship, and instead focus on recovery.
Those in recovery may not have reached a level of emotional stability and self-awareness needed for healthy dating in sobriety. They may be seeking to fill a void. Before dating, having confidence in sobriety, a strong support network and a relapse prevention plan are critical.
There are real risks associated with relapse and accidental overdose. In 2022, there were 4,703 reported overdoses in Pennsylvania, or 36.2 overdoses per 100,000 residents.
Those who decide to date should set clear boundaries with people they engage with. They should discuss their sobriety and preferences, such as alcohol-free outings.
To find people who respect their choices and boundaries, those in recovery can go to their support systems, use sober dating apps or find sober communities with like-minded people.
Self-care should prioritized. The right partner will respect a commitment to sobriety.
