A newborn baby was discovered dead in a trash can Wednesday night in an Amazon warehouse in Phoenix.

A newborn baby was discovered dead in a trash can Wednesday night in an Amazon warehouse in Phoenix.

The Associated Press reports police and firefighters responded to a 911 call about “a deceased infant in the women’s restroom located inside the secured facility,” the Phoenix Police Department said.

ABC15 in Phoenix reports that when they arrived, the infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Phoenix Police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis told the AP that they have talked with the infant’s mother but won’t identify her yet. They also wouldn’t confirm whether or not she is an Amazon employee.

“This is a terribly sad and tragic incident,” Amazon said in a released statement. “We are working with local authorities to support their investigation. The safety and wellness of our team is our top priority.”

A police investigation into the death is ongoing.

The Amazon warehouse in Phoenix is one of four in the area. According to an Amazon spokeswoman, it employs more than 1,000 people full-time.
