Snakes can survive some pretty amazing conditions. Recently, one even made it through the spin cycle.
A woman in Evanston, Ill., opened the lid on her washing machine only to see a snake inside, NBC News in Chicago reports.
“I was totally creeped out,” Sanela Kamencic told NBC 5. “How did a snake get in the house let alone the washer?”
Kamencic contacted authorities — which would be the police and animal control. They arrived and were able to get the snake out of the machine.
“I could smell it and could tell that it had actually been through a cycle,” Animal Control Warden Jason Pound told NBC 5. “Smelled like Downy.”
It turns out the snake has a name: Penelope, and it belongs to a 12-year-old boy who lives near Kamencic. The boy had lost Penelope three days earlier.
The warden took Penelope to Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital, where a veterinarian gave the reptile the once-over.
Despite having gone through a full wash cycle, the vet told NBC 5 Penelope “looked pretty good” and will be just fine.
“We have never had a snake come in that was found in a washing machine,” the unnamed vet told NBC 5.
