First sports bet placed from outer space
It was a bet that was out of this world.
On Thursday, billionaire Jared Isaacman placed the first sports bet from space to Las Vegas. In all, he wagered $4,000 on the Washington Football Team and New York Giants game and another $4,000 on if the Philadelphia Eagles would be named the 2022 NFL Champions.
The bets were placed with BetMGM and MGM Grand. Any earnings won from the wagers will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Isaacman placed the bets while commanding Inspiration4, the world’s first all-civilian mission to orbit the earth.
“This is truly a historic moment,” Matt Prevost, chief revenue officer of BetMGM, said in a news release. “On top of the excitement of bets being made from space, we’re even more thrilled to be able to contribute and raise awareness for a great cause in St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”
Isaacman is part of a four-person crew that also includes Hayley Arceneaux, Chris Sembroski and Sian Proctor. They were launched by SpaceX, owned by billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Inspiration4 launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and will travel across a low earth orbit on a multi-day journey.
In addition to being the world’s first all-civilian crew, the goal of Inspiration4 is to raise awareness and money for St. Jude.
According to the Inspiration4 website, the crew is expected to splash down Saturday in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast.
“The all-civilian Inspiration4 astronauts are paving the way for a future where space is more accessible to all who wish to go, and we are so proud that they entrusted us to fly them,” SpaceX President and CEO Gwynne Shotwell said in the news release.
