Ben & Jerry's plans CBD-infused ice cream
We always knew Ben and Jerry were cool, but now we know just how cool.
Ben & Jerry’s, those purveyors of our delicious ice dreams — are ready to hop on the latest trend: CBD-infused food — well, as soon as they can legally do it.
The company announced on its website: “We are committed to bringing CBD-infused ice cream to your freezer as soon as it’s legalized at the federal level.”
Currently, the Food and Drug Administration prohibits adding cannabidiol, or CBD, to food and beverages. However, the department has a public hearing planned to address the legalization of CBD-infused foods and beverages for Friday. Ben & Jerry’s reports they have submitted a comment in support of legalization.
“We’re doing this for our fans,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy. “We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a fun, Ben & Jerry’s way.”
The company’s already had a few flavors with names that would be perfect candidates: Think Half Baked and Dave Matthews Band Magic Brownies.
Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of the cannabis plant. However, CBD doesn’t cause a user to get “high.”
Ben & Jerry’s encourages customers to submit a statement to the FDA on the matter. Statements from the public are being accepted through July 2 on the regulations.gov site.
