Bar owner pulls down cash from walls to pay workers

For the past 15 years, patrons have contributed dollar bills to decorate the walls and ceiling of The Sand Bar in Tybee Island, Ga.

But now, with the coronavirus pandemic having shut down the bar, owner Jennifer Knox knew there was a better use for that cash.

CNN reports Knox and several other staffers took the money down to help pay her out-of-work employees.

“We were sitting there doors locked, and I’m like oh my gosh, ‘There’s money on the walls and we have time on our hands,” she told CNN. “‘We gotta get this money down.’”

Knox told CNN it took three and a half days to pull all of the money down and clean it.

Some of the cash had dozens of staples in it. Some was foreign currency.

In all, there was $3,714 gathered up. The stacks of bills stretched along the entire bar.

Knox said that some of her customers who heard about what she was doing contributed more.

In the end, Knox’s four bartenders and two musicians received $600 each.

“We all look out for each other,” Knox said. “We are all in this together.”
