5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend: March 17-19
We’ve made it to the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Here are some ways to spend it.
Flower Show
“Five Senses of Splendor” opens Saturday at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Oakland. There will be thousands of spring blooms, including lilies, amaryllis, petunias, daffodils, tulips and hyacinths, in addition to a giant perfume bottle, harmonious chime canopies and a cascading fountain. The Japanese-style inspired South Conservatory will bloom with red and white flowers.
Tickets must be reserved in advance. Facemasks are recommended. Tickets are $21.95 for adults, $19.95 for seniors and students over 18, $13.95 for children 2-18. Children under 2 are free.

Ballet
Texture Contemporary Ballet presents “Rediscover” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday at the New Hazlett Theater on the North Side. The diverse dance performance production will feature two world premiere works choreographed by artistic director Alan Obuzor, “Euphoria” and “Flash of Red.” There will also be the return of “Unchanging Change.”
Pittsburgh’s Cello Fury will perform.
There will be a shorter children’s performance at 4 p.m. on Saturday and post show discussions with artists after the Friday and Saturday evening. performances.
Tickets are $30, $25 in advance. Student, senior and artist tickets are $20.

Penguin-palooza
The National Aviary on the North Side presents “Penguin-palooza” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Guests can meet the colony of African Penguins in Penguin Point, watch a feeding and talk with experts. Discussions will include what makes penguins so unique.
Tickets are $17.95 for adults, $16.95 for seniors and $14.95 for children. Children under 2 are free.
An additional ticket is needed for “Brushes and Birds” on March 18, a step-by-step painting class hosted by Maria DeSimone Prascak of Maria’s Ideas, where attendees create a penguin portrait. Cost is $64.
There is also an additional ticket needed for those who want to attend a brunch at 11 a.m. on Sunday in The Garden Room. Cost is $55 for adults and $35 for children 12 and under.

Community Day
The August Wilson African American Cultural Center, Downtown, is hosting its spring edition of “AWCommunity Day” on Saturday. From noon to 4 p.m. there will be sports, arts and entertainment, including an artist market, crafts and face painting.
Visitors to the free event will have the opportunity to create a piece of glass art and get a photo with mascots from the Steelers and Pirates.
There will be live performances by Dripp Squad, Jacquea Mae and Byron Nash, and Blaire C and Cam Warren. Young Dreamers Bookstore will hold a book reading.

Dancing shoes
Attack Theatre presents “Rock, Paper, Sizzle,” from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. It’s an opportunity to see and join in the creative process of dance. This one-night event will transform Attack Theatre’s Lawrenceville space into performances, music and interactive games. Cocktails and light fare from Sprezzatura will be served.
Proceeds will support the nonprofit theater’s arts educational programs.
Attendees must be 21 years old.
Prices range from $65- $250.
