An Upper St. Clair man called police Monday morning, saying he had killed his wife and that he was going to kill himself, police said.

When authorities arrived at the home in the 100 block of Thousand Oaks Drive they found the couple dead.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified the couple early Tuesday morning as John Happel, 67, and Niki Happel, 54.

The couple was recently estranged, and Niki Happel had returned to the home for belongings when she was shot and killed, police said.

John Happel is believed to have shot himself shortly after calling police, they said.

Upper St. Clair police and the South Hills Area Council of Governments’ SWAT team initially responded and Allegheny County police are now investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Allegheny County police tipline at 1-833-255-8477.
