Pennsylvania reports 8,818 new covid-19 cases, 185 deaths

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health on Tuesday reported 8,818 additional cases and 185 deaths attributed to the coronavirus.

The death toll for the state stands at 16,546 since the pandemic started last March. With the day’s report, there have been 568 deaths counted this month.

Of the deaths newly reported on Tuesday, 145 are from December and 40 are from January. December now has 5,022 deaths, the highest of any month since the start of the pandemic. April had 3,394 deaths, May 2,646 and November 2,484; the rest had less than 1,000.

The new reported cases brings the total number of coronavirus cases to 673,915. The state’s seven-day average is at 7,367 cases and the state’s seven-day total cases is 51,566.

Allegheny County recorded 565 new cases bringing their total cases to 56,827, while Westmoreland saw 228 new cases for the day bringing their total cases to 20,393.

Here’s the total number of new cases for the other counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania: Armstrong (55), Beaver (89), Butler (147), Fayette (70), Indiana (38), Somerset (53), and Washington (105).

The state noted that more than 3.3 million people the state have tested negative for the virus.

As of Jan. 4, the state vaccine dashboard shows that 135,044 doses of covid vaccines have been administered to people in the state.

According to the state covid-19 dashboard, there are 5,684 people hospitalized with covid-19. Of that number, 1,148 patients are in the intensive care unit. The health department says that most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

According to the state, there are 54,956 resident cases of covid-19 in nursing and personal care homes, and 10,042 cases among employees, for a total of 64,998 at 1,482 distinct facilities.

Out of the total number of deaths, 9,079 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

Approximately 19,731 of the total cases in the state are among health care workers.
