Pennsylvania reports 224 new coronavirus deaths, adds 9,966 cases
Pennsylvania’s Department of Health on Thursday reported 224 new deaths attributed to the coronavirus.
The death toll for the state stands at 13,392. There have been 1,967 deaths already this month. Of the 224 deaths newly reported, 220 are from December, three are from November and one is from July.
The state also reported 9,966 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of cases to 529,335. The state has been averaging more than 10,000 cases a day for the past week. The state’s seven-day total cases is 72,046.
Allegheny County recorded 850 new cases, while Westmoreland saw 397 new cases for the day.
The state noted that more than 3.1 million people in the state have tested negative for the virus.
According to the state covid-19 dashboard, there are 6,209 people hospitalized with covid-19. Of that number, 1,246 patients are in the intensive care unit. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.
According to the state, there are 45,858 resident cases of covid-19 in nursing and personal care homes, and 8,411 cases among employees, for a total of 54,269 at 1,418 distinct facilities.
Out of the total number of deaths, 7,871 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.
About 17,326 of the total cases in the state are among health care workers.
The department said that mask-wearing is required in all businesses, stressing that mask-wearing is one way to help prevent the spread of covid-19.
