It may be hot outside, but there’s a slight breeze blowing for thousands of Pennsylvania families awaiting tuition bills from Penn State. Trustees Thursday voted to freeze tuition at its main campus for an unprecedented second consecutive year .

The vote called for holding base undergraduate tuition for Pennsylvania residents at $17,416 a year at the University Park campus.

Closer to home, tuition will be frozen for the fifth consecutive year at $12,718 at eight regional campuses including Beaver, DuBois, Fayette, Greater Allegheny, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango and Wilkes-Barre.

Penn State joins Temple University in Philadelphia as state-related universities that are maintaining a freeze two years in a row. Base undergraduate tuition at Temple is $16,080.

The oversight board for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education also voted to freeze tuition at 14 state-owned universities. Base undergraduate tuition at the universities will remain at $7,716.

Families with students at the University of Pittsburgh will have to dig a little deeper for tuition this fall.

Most Pennsylvania residents will pay 2% more for tuition at Pitt’s four regional campuses and 2.75% more at its main campus in Oakland.
