Fake meme claims hunting and fishing seasons are canceled in Pennsylvania

A meme circulating on social media channels falsely claims that the Pennsylvania Game Commission has canceled all hunting and fishing seasons for 2020.

But as the commission noted on its official page, it “has not suspended, altered or changed any hunting regulations, seasons or bag limits in response to the covid-19 outbreak.”

And, while the fake meme was created with a copy of the commission’s logo and using the commission’s name, the Game Commission has no authority over fishing seasons in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is the agency regulating fishing seasons in the state.

While the Fish and Boat Commission did cancel the early Youth Mentored Trout day (March 28) and the early opening day for trout season (April 4), it did not cancel any other seasons, fishing or otherwise.

The consolidated statewide schedule for all counties during the 2020 trout season was cut back to just one Mentored Youth Trout Day on Saturday, April 11, and one statewide opening day for trout season on Saturday, April 18.

Clicking on the fake meme is not recommended. That action opens a website that claims to be a prank site, but also could contain computer viruses and the like.
