Bedford County man charged with sale of guns stolen from federal custody
A Bedford County man has been charged in connection with the theft and sale of multiple guns from a federal facility.
Richard A. Schreiber, 38, of Everett in eastern Bedford County faces eight charges related to the sale of weapons found to be stolen from the National Firearms and Ammunition Destruction (NFAD) Branch, a facility used by the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as other law enforcement groups.
ATF officials began an investigation in February , when a gun seized in Philadelphia was found to have a serial number for a slide component that was supposed to have been destroyed at the NFAD facility.
U.S. Attorney Scott Brady said Schreiber allegedly sold firearms — along with components and ammunition — taken from the facility by Christopher L. Yates, an employee of Allied Security working at NFAD, according to a federal indictment.
Yates has been charged with similar offenses in the Northern District of West Virginia, federal officials said.
ATF officials said Yates took more than five machine guns, 115 pistols and revolvers, and 3,000 slides and pieces of ammunition from NFAD custody. Agents seized 101 firearms, 1,352 slides and more than 123,000 rounds of ammunition from Schreiber, as well as 28 firearms from people to whom he sold weapons.
Schreiber faces up to 65 years in prison as well as a possible $2 million fine.
