A 4-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the stomach by his grandmother Thursday, according to a report from WPVI.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. on the unit block of East Penn Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.

According to WPVI, the grandmother owns the gun and has a valid permit to carry.

The news site said she was unloading it in the living room, where she normally does, when a round went off.

Police said there were three other children in the room at the time but no one else was injured.

The child was sent to Einstein Medical Center, and was then airlifted to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. He has since stabilized and is expected to recover.

“The family member is cooperating with police. Detectives are on location and they’re going to process and search the scene with a search warrant, which is normal protocol when a shooting of this nature takes place inside of the property,” Chief Inspector Scott Small told WPVI.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw tweeted that the incident appeared to be a “tragic accident” and that “These tragedies should never happen, and their impact affects entire communities.”
