Greensburg resident always put family first

Nancy Aleandri always put her family first.

And with three children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, she had plenty of opportunities to do so.

“Her family was really everything to her,” said granddaughter Megan Aleandri.

Mrs. Nancy Aleandri, 81, of Greensburg, died Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Westmoreland Manor.

Born in Greensburg on June 8, 1937, she was the daughter of late Harry R. Thomas and late Esther Thomas.

At the age of 18, Mrs. Aleandri married her late husband, John, and spent just over 40 years together. Mrs. Aleandri worked in the cafeteria at Wendover Junior High School, now Wendover Middle School.

Living in the West Point neighborhood, Mrs. Aleandri quickly became a staple in the community.

With her children attending the Hempfield Area School District at the time, she became close with both students and parents, Megan Aleandri said.

“She was a big part of that community,” Megan Aleandri said.

When she wasn’t spending time with her family or working, Mrs. Aleandri enjoyed traveling to Europe, Russia and Egypt.

At home, she enjoyed bingo, poker and playing with her poodle, Jacque. Every Saturday, Mrs. Aleandri and Megan Aleandri would meet for lunch and to go shopping.

“She was almost more of my mother,” Megan Aleandri said. “She really gave me my love of reading.”

In addition to Megan Aleandri, Mrs. Aleandri is survived by her son Mark Aleandri of Rochester, daughter Lorraine Aleandri-Hachgenei of Germany, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received 4 to 8 p.m. at the Leo M. Bacha Funeral Home, 516 Stanton St., Greensburg. Prayers will begin 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Entombment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.
