UPMC’s $1.3 billion hospital tower in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood finally has an opening date.
On Jan. 24, 2027, scores of patients at UPMC Presbyterian will be transferred from the existing building to a new, 17-story facility right next door.
Once all patients are moved, the old structure will become administrative space.
UPMC officials previously said the tower’s first day of operation will be in 2027, but until this week, the exact opening date was not made known to the public.
The 636-bed tower at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and De Soto Street will focus on transplants, cardiology and neurology. It will come with a 450-spot parking garage as well as restaurants, meeting areas and other public spaces on its first four floors.
Construction started in 2022 and is expected to wrap up in October. From there, UPMC will conduct a series of rehearsals through December to ensure the building’s “facilities, paths of travel and patient care areas are set up ideally,” Rader said.
The effort to expand UPMC’s flagship hospital has stuck to original timelines and cost estimates.
In July, UPMC named the project the Kamin Tower following a $65 million donation to the organization from philanthropists Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin.
