Thousands came out to participate in the 2014 PittsburghWalk Now for Autism Speaks. Laurel Highlands chapter will host a Sept. 8 walk at Idlewild Park & Soak Zone’s Storybook Forest.

Laurel Highlands Autism Speaks Walk will be held at Idlewild & Soak Zone’s Storybook Forest this year.

Children and adults with autism, their families, friends, colleagues and neighbors are welcome to participate in the Sept. 8 event at the Ligonier Township amusement park.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions for the needs of people with autism, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, the organization states. The walk also promotes understanding and acceptance.

Autism Speaks funds research, leads state and federal advocacy and provides resources for every stage of life, according to its staff.

Highlights of this sensory-friendly event include bubbles, coloring, face-painting and a quiet space for those needing a break from the action.

Participants are encouraged to register in advance, form a walk team, join one or donate.

This year’s goal is $59,900.

On-site registration begins at 9 a.m. and the event will run until noon.
