A Yukon man said he deeply regrets driving intoxicated in December 2018 when he crashed on Interstate 70, seriously injuring two children.
“Ever since that happened, basically I just did a complete 360 on my life,” said Andrew Joshua Calvin, 32. “I’m sorry that I made a mistake … but I’m doing everything in my power to get my life better.”
Calvin was sentenced Friday to 12 months of probation and six months on house arrest with electronic monitoring. State police said his eastbound car rolled over on Dec. 9, 2018, in Hempfield after hitting another vehicle, a barrier and guiderail.
Two boys in the back seat of the vehicle, then ages 6 and 3, were taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. Calvin told investigators he had used cocaine and Suboxone, which can be used to treat pain or an opioid addiction, according to court records.
Public defender Donna McClelland asked Judge Timothy Krieger for leniency. She suggested a combination of drug treatment and probation would be a good fit in the case.
“Mr. Calvin has done what he could to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” she said.
Assistant District Attorney Jim Hopson suggested a jail term of six to 23 months would be more appropriate.
Calvin pleaded guilty in February to driving under the influence and two counts of child endangerment.
“I know you didn’t intend to hurt those children,” Krieger said.
He was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.
“You’re a young man, you don’t have to let this define you,” Krieger said.
