Investigators shut down part of South Main Street in Greensburg on Friday to gather more evidence in a hit-and-run that left a 72-year-old woman in critical condition.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was crossing the road with the assistance of a wheeled walker when she was struck. Police said she lives in Greensburg.
Authorities believe the vehicle may be a 2001 to 2006 Honda CRV sport utility that is light in color. They updated this description Friday afternoon. Initially, it was thought to be a silver Honda Fit.
Detective Sgt. Justin Scalzo said the collision happened at 9:40 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Third Street. The vehicle would have front end damage.
“It is our advice to the motorist that struck this woman to turn yourself in,” he said. “You are going to be found.”
Police believe she was in the crosswalk, using a wheeled walker with a seat, on South Main Street when the vehicle hit her, Lt. Rob Jones said. The woman’s shoe and what appeared to be part of a plastic covering for a vehicle’s light were in the middle of South Main Street. The walker rested on a nearby sidewalk Thursday night while police gathered evidence.
“She would’ve had a very hard time moving out of the way of that vehicle,” Scalzo said.
The intersection is lit by a street light. Investigators weren’t sure where she was headed or coming from. They were looking at surveillance footage Friday. Drivers involved in crashes involving other vehicles or people are required by law to stop, render aid and provide information, Scalzo said.
“This person failed to do that,” he said. “This person hit an elderly woman that needed a walker to assist her. … Instead of helping her, instead of calling 911, they chose to just leave, not knowing if she was alive or dead and just left her laying on the side of the road.”
Other motorists in the area spotted her on the ground and called 911. Anyone with information on the identity of the driver or vehicle involved can contact Greensburg police at 724-834-3800.
