Memorial Day events

• Irwin: A parade sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, follow Main Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, then proceed eastward to Irwin Union Cemetery for a ceremony. Army veteran David Mahlstedt, a supervisor at Snyder Funeral Home, will be the guest speaker.

• Jeannette: The grand opening of the amphitheater on Clay Avenue will be from 4 to 6 p.m. May 30. There will be speakers and music by the Jeannette Community Band. A ceremony will be at 9 a.m. Memorial Day at Jeannette City Hall. Taps will be played and there will be 21-gun salutes at Sacred Heart Cemetery, the Revolutionary Soldier grave on Margaret Street, Jeannette Catholic Cemetery and Jeannette Memorial Park. Eric Davanzo will be the speaker.

• Ligonier: Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will host a Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. May 29 at Donaldson Field, 203 Boquet St. A luncheon will be at noon at the VFW, 149 E. Main St., and there will be music from 1 to 4 p.m.

• North Huntingdon: Norwin Historical Society will host a memorial ceremony at 1 p.m. May 30 at the mausoleum of the Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, Route 30. A second service will be at 2 p.m. at the Westmoreland City Veterans memorial, Broadway Avenue, in front of Westmoreland City Fire Hall.

Fundraisers

• West Newton First Church of God will host a takeout Strawberry Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. May 27 at Sewickley Grange, 1011 Greensburg Pike, Sewickley Township. Details: 724-872-7467

• Stewartsville Lions Club will host a drive-thru chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. until sold out May 30 at Holiday Travel Agency, 12239 Route 30, North Huntingdon. Menu: half chicken, roll, apple sauce, dessert and drink, $8. Details: 724-751-4308

Meetings

• The Greensburg Garden Center will meet at 11 a.m. June 1 at the center, 951 Old Salem Road, Greensburg. Guest speaker Nancy Neel from Sunny Sprouts will discuss new plants of 2021. A light lunch will be served.

• The Greensburg chapter of the Women’s Business Network will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 27. The group meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Details: Tina McHugh, 724-787-5419

• Super Seniors of Westmoreland County will meet at noon June 1 at Community United Methodist Church, 3487 Route 130, Trafford. Entertainment will be by The Drewsmen. Lunch: $6. Reservations and masks required. Reservations: Linda, 724-744-3993

Music

Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce will host free concerts at 7 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 22 in the gazebo at the Diamond. The featured group May 30 will be the Ligonier Valley High School Marching Band. In case of inclement weather, an announcement will be made by 5 p.m. to move the concert into Town Hall or canceled. Support group

• A bereavement group for anyone who has lost a loved one will begin to meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 8 at New Life Presbyterian Church, 326 Raymaley Road, Penn Township. Details: Nancy, Lohr, 724-880-9648

Special events

• Greensburg Garden Center will sponsor a one-day bus trip June 11 to the outside Philadelphia Flower Show. Cost: $145; garden center members, $135. Reservations required. Details and reservations: 724-837-0245

• The pool at Laurelville Christian Retreat Center, 941 Laurelville Lane, Mt. Pleasant Township, will be open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and noon to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays beginning June 5. Swimmers must make a reservation daily up to eight days in advance by calling 724-423-2624 or email pool@laurelville.org. Cost: $6 per person. Learn to swim lessons will be offered beginning June 7. • Laurelville Christian Retreat Center, Mt. Pleasant Township, will offer a Lunch & Learn fundraiser to celebrate the birthday of Frank Lloyd Wright at noon June 8 at the center, 941 Laurelville Lane. School Program and Outreach Manager Amy Humbert will discuss Wright and the history of Fallingwater. Cost: $15. Reservations required by June 2.
