Westmoreland happenings: Fruit sale, craft shows, stuffed pork chop dinner
Submissions from nonprofit organizations for Briefly Speaking can be emailed to Carol Pinto-Smith at cpinto-smith@triblive.com or mailed to Briefly Speaking, 210 Wood St., Tarentum, PA 15084. Include a complete address and daytime phone number. Submissions are due at least two weeks before the event. Each announcement is printed once; there is no fee.
Church news
The Rosary Altar Society at St. James Church, New Alexandria, will host a screening of the movie, “The Matter of Life,” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in the church social hall, 306 St. James Lane. The movie discusses the question, “When does life begin?” and may not be suitable for all audiences. A question-and-answer session will follow. Fundraisers
• Lincoln Heights Civic Association will have bingo from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at the center, 42 Millersdale Road, Jeannette. There will be 20 regular games and five quickies. Cost: 25 cents for a three-card board; $1 for quickies. Payout is 50/50. Free coffee.
• A holiday craft and vendor show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 306 St. John Drive, Latrobe. There will be ethnic food and a basket raffle. Proceeds will benefit the parish. Details: 724-875-0742.
• An indoor flea market will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Lincoln Heights Civic Association Hall, 44 Millersdale Road, Jeannette. There will be vendors, snacks and baked goods.
• St. John United Church of Christ, 1230 Brownstown Road, North Huntingtdon, will have the last Dog Days of Summer hot dog sale of the season from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at the church. Combo meals and beverages available. Details: Lil, 724-493-8982.
• Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary will have its annual dollhouse and miniature show and sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Greensburg Masonic Center, 349 Donahoe Road, Hempfield. There will be door prizes and children’s activities. Admission: $5; age 2 to 10, $2. Proceeds benefit the auxiliary scholarship program. • A craft show will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 in the basement at Trinity United Church of Christ, 139 N. Main St., Greensburg. All items will be hand-crafted. There will be food, baked goods, a basket auction and 50/50.
• Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Musical Bingo from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at Carol and Dave’s Roadhouse, 122 N Market St., Ligonier. Admission: $5. There will be prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Wear a costume to be entered into a prize drawing. Reservations: 724-238-2296.
• Derry First United Methodist Church is accepting reservations for a stuffed pork chop dinner set for 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the church, 311 N. • The Franklin Regional High School Marching Band is conducting a fresh fruit sale to fund a trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade on Dec. 7, 2023. Halloween
• Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Hobgoblin Hikes will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 at Mammoth Park, 171 County Park Road, Mt. Pleasant Township. Half-mile hike haunted by ghouls, monsters and goblins recommended for ages 8 and older. Parents are urged to attend with children. Donations will be accepted. Rain or shine. Details: 724-830-3950
Music

Special event
• Level Green Presbyterian Church, 105 Olive Drive, Trafford, will sponsor a fall StoryWalk from 2 to 4 p.m. on the church front lawn. Families can read five fall-themed children’s books on display as they walk on decorated paths and enjoy craft and activity stations. Refreshments will be served. Rain date is Oct. 23.
