Westmoreland happenings: August Fun Fest, Bible school, fire station open house, more
Church News
• St. James Church, 306 St. James Lane, New Alexandria, will have all-day Eucharistic Adoration Aug. 6 for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m., adoration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and benediction will be at 6 p.m. Drop in anytime during the day. Details: 724-668-2829, option 3
• Mt. Olive Church, 515 Pleasant Valley Road, Bullskin, will have Bible school from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 4 to 8 at the church. Toddlers through adults welcome. The theme will be “Living Life Upside Down.” Monday will be photo night and there will be crafts, recess and snacks each evening. There will be no closing program.
Festival
• The August Fun Fest will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at Cedar Creek Park, 453 Evergreen Drive, Rostraver. Magic Moments will perform doo-wop music and oldies at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the amphitheater and local bands will perform at noon, and 2, 3, 4 and 5 p.m. in pavilion 1. Bring a lawn chair. There will be a car cruise, bingo, a flea market and a model railroad display by the Mid-Mon Valley Model Railroad Club. Cost: $4 for an all-day activity pass, includes unlimited admission to the carnival amusement rides, petting zoo and more. General admission and parking are free. Sponsored by the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation and Road Kings Car Club.
Fundraisers
• A super Friday night bingo will be Aug. 2 at Marian Hall, Route 119, Crabtree. Doors open at 5 p.m. and early birds start at 6:30 p.m. Cost: $35, includes supplies and dauber. Additional packs will be sold. Details: 724-834-9789 or 724-834-0709.
• Community Church of Hecla, 537 Hecla Road, Mt. Pleasant Township, will host a Vera Bradley bingo at 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at the church. Doors open at 1 p.m. A light lunch will be served. Details: 724-396-8065 or 724-244-2586.
Senior Citizen News
• Super Seniors of Westmoreland County will meet at noon Aug. 6 at Community United Methodist Church, 3487 Route 130, Trafford. Magician Matt Sigler will entertain. Lunch reservations required by anyone who did not attend the July meeting. Cost: $2. Annual dues: $8. New members welcome. Reservations: Theresa Barry, 724-744-3565.
Special events
• Greensburg Engine Company 7, 625 E. Pittsburgh St., will host an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at the firehouse. There will be information tables, tours and an opportunity to meet the firefighters. Table topics will include fire prevention, gear, breathing apparatus, a decontamination demonstration, recruitment and career advancement opportunities, engine and rescue demonstrations and a firefighters challenge. Children and adults from any area are welcome.
• A nonpartisan educational program for anyone interested in running for political office will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at the offices of Protect PT, 3344 Route 130, suite A, Harrison City. Participants will receive information on paperwork filing requirements, funds needed and how to reach voters and raise funds. Reservations required: protectpt.info/run4office. • Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce is accepting entries for the annual calendar contest. Photographs should be recognizable as a location in the Ligonier Valley and can include landscapes, special events, landmarks and more. Submission deadline: Aug. 19. Details: 724-238-4200 or Ligonier.com.
• Downtown Latrobe merchants will sponsor a Night Market from 4 to 11 p.m. Aug. 7 along downtown streets. There will be music, food vendors and artisans and businesses will be open. Prizes will be awarded in Flamingo Bingo for participants who collect letters at participating businesses, and there will be a 50-50 raffle and limbo contest.
Veterans News
• Veterans will be able to connect with other veterans at the annual Veteran & Community Partner Appreciation Picnic planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 8 at Chestnut Pavilion at White Oak Park Extension, 2632 McClintock Road, White Oak. Reservations required: 412-678-7704. The event is sponsored by the White Oak Vet Center.
