Westmoreland happenings: art exhibits, bus trip, meetings, more
Arts
• Greensburg Hempfield Area Library will exhibit the works of local artist and interior designer Doris Wood through Sept. 6 to Oct. 11 at the library, 237 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Greensburg. A free opening reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 20. Details: ghal.org.
• The Greensburg Garden and Civic Center will host an exhibit, “For the Love of Cats,” featuring the Feral Cat Painters Gallery and Friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 at the center, 951 Old Salem Road. Adoptable cats from Wayward Whiskers Animal Rescue in Greensburg will be on hand. Proceeds from sales of art will be donated to the rescue.
Bus Trip
• Greensburg Garden Center will sponsor a bus trip Sept. 18 along the Old Lincoln Highway to the Remember Me Rose Garden in Shanksville, the Jean Bonnet Tavern and the Flight 93 Memorial. The bus will leave the center at 8:30 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Cost: $75; center members, $65. Reservations required. Reservations: 724-837-0245.
Church News
• Greensburg Church of the Brethren will host a night of fun and fellowship for individuals and groups with developmental disabilities from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays at the church, 554 Stanton St. Dinner is included. Participants must be accompanied by a family member or caregiver. Donations will be accepted. Details: 724-834-2130 or gbgcob.org.
Fundraisers
• St. James Lutheran Church, Youngstown, will have a basket party from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at the church, 4329 Route 982. Cost: $10, includes food and drink. There will be a basket raffle and 50-50. Proceeds will benefit the Eagle Scout project of Hunter Dumnich to get a new digital sign for the church. Tickets: April, 724-787-5205.
• Jeannette American Legion will host bingo at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at the post, 109 S. Fifth St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Cost: $25 per packet, includes regular and special games. There will be a $750 jackpot game, magic number, door prizes and 50-50. The kitchen will be open. Smoke-free venue. Proceeds benefit veterans and community activities. Details: Rick, 724-600-5061.
• St. Michael Orthodox Church, Greensburg, will sell takeout lamb shish kebab dinners, gyros and frozen ethnic food from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at the church, 1182 Ashland Ave.
• Olive Branch Baptist Church, 296 Route 981, Rostraver Township, will host its monthly clothing sale from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at the church. Donations of clean, used clothing in black plastic bags are welcome and can be placed on the porch at the rear of the building. Profits are used to help those in need.
• A super bingo will be Sept. 6 at Marian Hall at St. Bartholomew Church, 2538 Route 119, Crabtree. Doors open at 5 p.m. and early birds begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission: $35, and additional packs will be sold. Smoke-free venue. Details: 724-834-9789.
• West Newton Public Library, 1214 N. Water St., will participate in a food drive Sept. 9 to 13 to benefit the Westmoreland Food Bank. Donations can be dropped off during regular hours: noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays. Items especially needed include Hamburger Helper, boxed meals and canned goods.
• A car show and spaghetti dinner will be hosted Sept. 8 at St. James Church, 306 St. James Lane, New Alexandria. The car show will be from noon to 5 p.m., rain or shine. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The vehicle fee will be by donation and trophies will be awarded. Spaghetti will be served from noon to 4 p.m. Cost: $12; 10 and younger, $5. • St. Barbara Parish, 111 Raymaley Road, Penn Township, will have bingo at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 4. Doors open at 5 p.m. Paper packages start at $27 and include regular, special, jackpot games and magic number games and a chance for a door prize. Meetings
• South Hills Coin Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Bethel Park Municipal Building, 5100 W. Library Ave. The program will be about the history of Iceland through the country’s coinage.
