A small idea to clean up a tiny park in Greensburg has grown bigger thanks to the generosity of residents.
The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Downtown Greensburg Project teamed up to plan a community clean-up day next month for the parklet on South Pennsylvania Avenue, which is nestled between two buildings.
In addition to cleaning out trash, pulling weeds and planting new flowers, organizers plan to install a “Little Free Pantry,” a place where residents can leave non perishable goods for those in need.
“If somebody’s in need they can stop by and pick up a couple of cans of food, and if somebody wants to donate they can stop by and drop off a couple of cans of food,” said Rick Steele, president of Greensburg Hose Co. #7.
The fire department asked its Facebook followers to donate money to buy new metal benches to replace the worn-out wooden ones in the park. It reached its $3,000 goal in less than a day, and is now raising money to replace the park’s trash cans as well.
“Now the whole project is really turning into something that’s really going to evolve the entire space,” Steele said.
He’ll work with junior firefighters to install the new equipment.
The clean-up day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26. Volunteers can sign up at the Downtown Greensburg Project Facebook page.
