Officials with the Hempfield Area School District this year opened a transition center aimed at helping students develop independent living and job readiness skills.

The center, located in a space previously used for the district’s cyber program in the maintenance facility and bus garage, was “created out of a need to meet students’ transition goals as they move forward into becoming citizens of our communities,” said Dayna Sikora, supervisor of special education.

The facility features various areas where students can learn different skills, including a kitchen where they learn to make recipes, use various kitchen utensils and practice their measuring skills; a grocery store where students can learn to use a cash register; and an office where they learn to make copies, file documents and practice computer skills.

It also includes a bedroom and living room; a sensory room and classroom; a locker room where students receive schedules and punch in for the day; and a space where they can build their career portfolios while focusing on learning how to write resumes, fill out job applications and send thank you letters.

“The goal of the transition center is to continue to grow/educate our students and partner with local community organizations, the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center, Hempfield Area students and staff in order to facilitate growth in our students to become exemplary citizens and prepare for college, vocational programs or career paths,” Sikora said.

The project was headed by special education teachers Sara Huth, Amanda Montell and Amanda Murray, who wanted to give students a space to develop specific skills.

Officials received several donations — including furniture and kitchen supplies — from other staff members.

They also raised $2,500 that was used to purchase a Cricut machine and various other items for the center.

“The staff are very proud of the accomplishment of opening this up this year, and they are also talking about how they are going to move forward next year with some changes and some partnerships that they are excited to develop,” Sikora said.

Sikora also has applied for a grant that, if awarded, will be used to start a Practical Assessment Exploration System, or PAES, which simulates working experiences.

“Every time the staff talk about the students participating in activities at the Transition Center, it is always focused on growth, excitement and the students’ growing interest in transition activities.

“The staff definitely show a dedication and commitment to the students in the Hempfield Area School District,” Sikora said.
