A Lancaster man was ordered Monday to stand trial on charges that he shot at a box truck driver last month in Unity.
Tyler J. Mieczkowski, 22, faces charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, fleeing from police and reckless endangerment, court records show.
Police said Mieczkowski fired several shots into the windshield of a box truck leaving Arnold Palmer Regional Airport on Dec. 29. He then led police on a 16-mile chase that ended in Blairsville, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.
The truck driver was not injured, the complaint said. He reported the alleged incident.
Mieczkowski’s attorney said his client had been suffering a mental health episode at the time of the shooting. Mieczkowski arrived in court Monday wearing a yellow jumpsuit, which Westmoreland County jail staff said is issued to inmates in the building’s disciplinary unit.
Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Mains opposed a request to reinstate Mieczkowski’s bond.
“The No. 1 factor here is the nature of the charges,” Mains said. “He fired multiple shots into a box truck at the airport, and it took the full extent of the authorities to stop him.”
Westmoreland County detectives and police units from Latrobe, Derry and Blairsville assisted Westmoreland County Park police during the incident, the complaint said.
Authorities ended the chase by placing spike strips on the road in Blairsville, causing Mieczkowski to crash, the complaint said. He then led police on a brief foot chase, police said.
District Judge Tamara Mahady sided with prosecutors in keeping Mieczkowski in jail.
“Given the situation, you do present a danger to the community,” Mahady said.
Mieczkowski is scheduled to be arraigned before Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge Timothy Krieger on Feb. 28.
