State police said Victor J. Machesky Jr., 63, was impaired when the Toyota Tacoma he was driving crossed over the median of Route 30 in Hempfield and slammed into an oncoming vehicle. He is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, reckless endangerment and related offenses.

The crash happened at 4:20 p.m. July 16 near Westmoreland Mall, according to a criminal complaint. Machesky was headed west when the pickup crossed the median and hit an eastbound vehicle.

The other driver was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter for treatment of a serious head and spine injuries, troopers said.

At the scene, Machesky smelled of alcohol and told investigators he had been drinking earlier in the day at a picnic, according to court papers. His blood-alcohol content was .141%. The legal limit to drive in Pennsylvania is .08%.

Machesky is free on $25,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is set for May 15. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records.
