Savory snacks, beer and wassail will be served in Hanna’s Tavern during a Nov. 8 candlelight open house at Historic Hanna’s Town in Hempfield.

A Nov. 8 candlelight open house will recreate 18th-century ambience at Historic Hanna’s Town in Hempfield.

Set for 4-8 p.m., the free event will feature food and drink and the opportunity to shop for new holiday merchandise at the historical site at 809 Forbes Trail Rd.

Visitors will be greeted by costumed re-enactors at Hanna’s Tavern, where savory snacks will be served, along with beer from All Saints Brewery and wassail made from a Colonial Williamsburg recipe.

Lanterns will light the way from the tavern to the Westmoreland History Education Center, where representatives of the Westmoreland Historical Society will serve tea and sweets, including gingerbread and pound cake with the site’s private-label jams and jellies.

Visitors also will be able to browse the center’s gift shop for “unique gift and holiday items with a sophisticated colonial, farmhouse and historical cottage style, as well as a fine collection of American and local history books for adults and children, and educational toys – many made in the USA,” according to WHS education coordinator Pam Curtin.

The history education center and shop are open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 12:30-4:30 p.m. Sundays. Historic Hanna’s Town is open for tours on weekends in November, but will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
