OK, the official remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King was Jan. 21, but the impact of King’s teaching will continue to unfold in Westmoreland County this weekend.
About 200 students, faculty and staff from Seton Hill University will mark King’s legacy Saturday when they spread out across 20 different nonprofit organizations to volunteer for a day of service.
Why so late?
Well, Seton Hill was on break Jan. 21, so university officials decided to answer King’s oft-voiced question “What are you doing for others?” this Saturday. The volunteers will take on a host of tasks ranging from mucking horse stalls and cleaning kennels to sorting books and playing games with patients.
Agencies in line for an influx of volunteers hoping to honor King include:
American Architectural Salvage; Animal Friends of Westmoreland County; Blackburn Center; Caritas Christi; Central Westmoreland Habitat for Humanity Warehouse; Central Westmoreland Habitat for Humanity Build site; Christian Layman Store; Faith Forward and Angel Arms; Greensburg-Hempfield Public Library; Hempfield Park; Overly’s Country Christmas; St. Emma’s Monastery; Stoneybrook Therapeutic Riding Center; St. Vincent DePaul store; Walnut Ridge Memory Care; Welcome Home Shelter; Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling Center; Westmoreland Parks and Recreation — Mammoth Park; Westmoreland Parks and Recreation — Twin Lakes Park; and the YWCA.
