Greensburg Salem School District’s Amos K. Hutchinson Elementary School is seen in Southwest Greensburg.

Staff at Hutchinson Elementary School are inviting local residents to attend the school’s second annual Light-Up Night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

A new tradition at the school in Southwest Greensburg, the event will feature a drive-through display of holiday lights and inflatables, student musical performances and surprise guests.

The event came about as a response to the covid-19 pandemic, when staff and faculty brainstormed a way to bring the community together safely for the holiday season after pandemic health protocols canceled class parties and other events at the school.

“It’s heartwarming to see our students, staff, faculty and community come together to celebrate the holiday season,” said Anthony Barbato, associate principal at the school.

The positive response to last year’s display prompted organizers to grow it into a continuing event.

Vehicles may enter through the school’s main entrance on Welty Street. It is preferred that visitors drive through the display, but families may walk if needed.

The event is free to attend, but donations via cash or check will be accepted at the end of the display to benefit the Hutchinson PTA and Club Crossroads.

Founded in 2016, Club Crossroads is a program held at Hutchinson Tuesday evenings during the school year, providing a space where “students can build safe and healthy relationships,” according to school officials.

Sponsored by Charter Oak Church, the program includes a family-style dinner and games.

Club Crossroads volunteers also provide school supplies, clothing, Christmas gifts, staff treats and other help throughout the year.

“We are grateful for our partnership with Club Crossroads,” Barbato said, noting the volunteers have provided back-to-school packages and helped to construct raised garden beds at the school. “They continue to donate their time and resources.”
