The nonprofit Healthy Kids Running Series is returning to Legion Keener Park in Latrobe for five weekly fall sessions, Sept. 15 through Oct. 13.

Local enrollment in the national program has increased from about 50 to 60 boys and girls ages 2 to 14, according to community coordinator Ryan Thomas of Fairfield.

“It’s a nice positive environment for (kids) to go out there and try their best,” said Thomas, whose 4-year-old son, Evan, participates in the Latrobe sessions. “It gives them an opportunity to race against each other, with lots of good sportsmanship and camaraderie. The other kids and the parents cheer them all on.”

The Latrobe program is held in a grassy area near Memorial Stadium.

Medals are awarded at the end of the five weeks, with top point scorers receiving a trophy.

Registration for the entire series can be completed at runsignup.com/hkrslatrobepa and costs $45 per child through Aug. 25. The cost then increases to $50.

Single-day race registration costs $20.
