Man’s best friend will have to wait until at least the weekend to run and play at Twin Lakes Dog Park.

Westmoreland County officials said Thursday morning’s heavy rains led to the closure of all three sections of the attraction at Twin Lakes Park, east of Greensburg.

“It’s on a hillside and when we get heavy rains, it can tear up to the turf. We want to keep everyone safe and make sure there’s no slipping and falling and nobody gets hurt,” said county Parks and Recreation Director Brandon Simpson.

Simpson said the park won’t reopen until at least Saturday, but officials will continue to monitor weather forecasts and ground conditions to determine when the fenced-in canine area, about the size of two football fields, is safe for use. Rain is in the forecast throughout Thursday as well as Friday and Saturday.

“It’s supposed to be nice on Sunday but we’ll re-evaluate it over the next couple of days,” Simpson said.
