Members of the Greater Latrobe School District marching band perform on Thursday, July 4, 2019, for the annual Latrobe Fourth of July parade in downtown Latrobe.

The committee preparing Latrobe’s 2020 4th of July Celebration is inviting public input to its first official planning meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the city council chambers.

“Anybody that wants to come, it’s open to the general public, the council, the mayor,” said Latrobe Fire Chief John Brasile, who has agreed to chair the committee and noted he’s rounding up sponsors for the annual event.

“We’ve got some good things going on,” he said. “We’re moving forward, with a lot of good ideas.”

“Now’s the time to get involved,” said Mayor Rosie Wolford. “If everybody does a little bit that means that no people have to do a lot.”

The event committee is embarking on a new chapter for the 50-year-old celebration as longtime chairwoman Carol Greenawalt retired from the role.

Brasile already proposed some changes for aspects of the multi-day festival — including a new venue for the midway, at the First Ward ball field, and new routes for the July 4 parade and for a 5-mile race.

Brasile noted, as fire chief, he already was involved in past 4th of July events — inspecting fireworks and overseeing firefighters providing traffic control.

He has said he would like to increase the size of the fireworks display that traditionally brings the festival to a close.
