State police found almost 30 animals living in poor conditions at a Hempfield Township home, officials said.

Seven cats, three dogs, 17 fish and a bearded dragon lizard were taken by Westmoreland County Humane Society officers after police said they observed the uncared for animals and piles of fecal matter in a Gladstone Drive home last week.

Responding to the house on April 24 for calls of an intruder, officers arrived to find two residents — Roni K. Boltich, 34, and Stephanie Little, 27 — who admitted to having used heroin, according to a report. An intruder was not found.

Police returned to the home the next day with a warrant and humane society officers, who took the animals to the shelter. Hempfield Township code enforcement officers also went to the home, finding several code violations, police said.

Westmoreland County Humane Society officers were not immediately available for comment.
