PennDOT plans project road closures in St. Clair Monday, in Murrysville in 2023

Road closures and detours lie ahead for motorists in two Westmoreland County communities as PennDOT makes plans for road and bridge improvements in St. Clair Township and Murrysville.

A section of Shannon Creek Road in St. Clair will be closed beginning Monday for a pipe replacement.

A bridge replacement affecting traffic on Murrysville’s School Road isn’t slated to take place until the summer of 2023. But a map and details of the planned work are being displayed on a PennDOT website through June 28.

According to PennDOT officials, Shannon Creek Road will be closed, between Shrum Hill and Wild Cat roads, beginning at 7 a.m. Monday and is not expected to reopen until 5 p.m. on Aug. 13.

During that time, drivers will be rerouted over a marked detour using Route 711.

The closure will allow crews to replace a 36-inch corrugated pipe with a concrete elliptical pipe of similar dimension. Elliptical pipes are designed to be less prone to leaks.

In Murrysville, PennDOT is planning to replace a bridge that carries School Road over Haymaker’s Run, near the intersection of Sardis Road.

According to Jay Ofsanik, acting press officer for PennDOT District 12, the bridge, build in 1940, is in poor condition.

“It’s reached a point where it’s no longer feasible to repair it,” he said. “It’s a better option to replace it.”

Plans call for replacing the corrugated metal plate arch culvert with a reinforced concrete rigid frame culvert.

Associated work will include drainage improvements and reconstruction of a 350-foot section of School Road (Route 4041).

PennDOT expects the project can be completed in about two months during the summer, when closure of the bridge won’t affect transportation of students in the Franklin Regional School District.

A 4.9-mile detour is planned, using Sardis Road, Old William Penn Highway and North Hills Road.
