Motorists will encounter nighttime lane restrictions beginning Monday as crews perform maintenance on two Westmoreland County bridges.

Single-lane restrictions will be in place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday on the Route 30 bridge in South Greensburg.

The same restrictions will occur on the Matthew Smelser Memorial Bridge, which carries Interstate 70 across the Youghiogeny River at the border of South Huntingdon and Rostraver townships.

Workers from Green Acres Contracting will clean bridge bearings and will perform scupper and strip seal flushing. Scuppers collect water on a bridge’s deck and direct it into a drainage system.

Traffic in the bridge work zones will be controlled by signage, with added flagging in some areas.

The work is part of a nearly $450,000 effort to preserve several state bridges in PennDOT District 12, which includes Westmoreland, Fayette, Washington and Greene counties.

Other Westmoreland bridge locations that are part of the project include:

• Route 30 — over Main Street in North Huntingdon; over Toll Road 66, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad, all in Hempfield; over Loyalhanna Creek and Mill Creek in Ligonier Township;

• Route 136 — over the Youghiogheny River in West Newton; over Sewickley Creek at the border of Sewickley and South Huntingdon townships;

• Route 981 — over the Youghiogeny River at the border of South Huntingdon and Rostraver townships;

• Route 993 — over Brush Creek in North Huntingdon;

• Donohoe Road — over Norfolk Southern Railroad in Hempfield;

• Finley Road — over Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad in Rostraver;

• Yukon Road — over Sewickley Creek at the border of Sewickley and South Huntingdon townships;

• Madison Road —over Toll Road 66 in Hempfield;

• Coal Hollow Road — over Pollock Run in Rostraver;

• Apples Mill Road — over Sewickley Creek at the border of Sewickley and South Huntingdon townships;

• West Tech Drive — over Route 119 in East Huntingdon;

• Carbon Road — over Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad in Hempfield;

• Forbes Road — over Turtle Creek in Trafford.

Interstate bridge inspection slated

Daytime single-lane restrictions are planned Monday through Friday, Sept. 19 for both eastbound and westbound traffic on the Belle Vernon/Speers Bridge that carries Interstate 70 over the Monongahela River where the borders of Westmoreland, Fayette and Washington counties meet.

The restrictions will be in place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily between I-70 exits 40 (Charleroi/Allenport) and 41 (Belle Vernon/Monessen) while Mackin Engineering inspects the bridge.

All work schedules are subject to favorable weather conditions.
