Pedestrian suffers head injury in Downtown Greensburg hit-and-run, police say
An elderly woman was injured by a hit-and-run driver late Thursday night while crossing South Main Street in Greensburg, city police said.
The victim, whose identity was not available, suffered a head injury from the collision with the vehicle at about 9:45 p.m. and was transported to Allegheny Health Network Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Lt. Rob Jones said.
The woman was in-and-out of consciousness when Officer Brandon Lennert, who was on routine patrol, arrived on the scene, Jones said. Police believe she was in the crosswalk when struck, Jones said, and her head slammed against the pavement. The driver fled the scene, police said.
The intersection is lit by a street light.
The woman’s shoe and what appeared to be part of a plastic covering for a vehicle’s light, were in the middle of South Main Street at the intersection of Third Street. A wheeled walker with a seat, which Jones said the victim was using, rolled away from the scene and came to rest on the sidewalk in front of the First Presbyterian Church on South Main Street.
Blood was visible on the pavement.
Jones said police had not yet determined which way the woman was crossing the street or in which direction the driver was traveling on South Main Street. Police will check to see if any video cameras on nearby buildings have pictures of the incident.
Traffic was diverted off that section of Main Street as police investigated.
A state police a reconstruction team was investigating the incident late Thursday night, as well as Westmoreland County detectives.
The Greensburg fire department assisted at the scene.
