Cops: Ohio man fled Derry traffic stop in stolen car
An Ohio man was driving a stolen car when he fled from a traffic stop Wednesday, Derry police said.
Ronald Lee Handy III, 22, of North Benton, Ohio, just west of Youngstown, was arrested by borough police on charges of theft, fleeing and eluding police, unauthorized use of a vehicle, receiving stolen property and driving without a license.
Police Chief Randy Glick said in court documents he saw Handy driving the wrong direction on one-way South Chestnut Street just after noon. Glick said he followed the gray 2012 Buick LaCrosse sedan onto West 3rd Avenue and tried to pull over the car when Handy attempted to drive down an alley.
When he activated his car’s emergency lights, “the vehicle refused to stop,” Glick said in court documents.
When Handy pulled onto Route 217 near the Mentor Street intersection, Glick said, Handy crashed into another car. Handy ran from the accident scene, but was found a short time later several blocks away on Reed Street.
The occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries, Glick said.
The car police say Handy was driving was reported stolen in Ohio, police said.
Handy was arraigned in night court and ordered held in the county prison without bond pending a preliminary hearing Nov. 13
