Norwin has reached tentative contracts with its teachers union and its cafeteria workers.

The school board is expected to vote Monday on the contract with the Norwin Education Association and the agreement with Service Employees International Union 32 BJ. Details of the agreements were not listed on the agenda for the school board’s Nov. 8 meeting, and the board did not discuss the tentative pacts.

Superintendent Jeff Taylor could not be reached for comment.

The NEA represents about 320 teachers, guidance counselors and school nurses. Its five-year contract expired Aug. 31. Teachershave remained on the job since classes started Sept. 8.

Over the life of the expired contract, the raises granted to the teachers increased the district’s annual payroll by 2.94%. That percentage increase takes into account new health insurance premium contributions from the teachers, which were directed back to the school district.

Ryan Lynn, a Hillcrest Intermediate School teacher and president of the Norwin Education Association, declined to comment.

The tentative contract with SEIU Local 32 BJ covers about 35 cafeteria workers.

In August, cafeteria workers had complained to the school board that Norwin’s offer of annual raises of $.20 per hour for a new two-year contract was “not a fair wage increase,” said Jackie Kucera, chief steward for the Norwin cafeteria workers.

Julie Karant, a spokesperson for SEIU Local 32 BJ, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
