The Norwin Lions Club is looking for a few good bakers for its 10th cupcake fundraiser, which raises money to provide food to students from food insecure families in three Norwin elementary schools and the intermediate school.
“We’ve raised between $90,000 and $100,000” from 10 years of what the group calls “Cubcake Wars,” said John Russo, a Norwin Lions Club member who organizes the event.
There is no admission charge to attend the event, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m. March 9 at the Norwin High School cafeteria, 251 McMahon Drive, North Huntingdon. Bakers will sell their cupcakes for $1 or $2 each and donate their proceeds to the Lions, Russo said.
There are usually about 15 bakers on hand, some of whom have been regulars for several years. They compete for best tasting, best decoratios, most funds raised and people’s choice for best in show.
”We need community support to make this event successful,” Russo said.
The sale raises money for the Lions’ Kitty Sack Program, which helps food insecure children at Norwin’s Stewartsville, Hahntown and Sunset Valley elementary schools and Hillcrest Intermediate School. Money also goes to Norwin Lions charities, such as providing glasses to students of needy families, Russo added.
This school year, the Lions Club is helping to feed about 70 children. It takes almost $400 to provide food for one child for a school year, Russo said.
