Part of a $1.8 million project aimed at updating several aspects of Hempfield Park is set to debut this weekend.
A new off-leash dog park will open Saturday following a grand opening ceremony, according to Aaron Siko, director of parks and recreation with the township. The dog park consists of four runs, two for large dogs and two for small dogs.
The park, located near the ball fields, was funded by the Land & Water Conservation Fund provided by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as well as through fundraising.

The grand opening event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature vendors and a small ribbon cutting ceremony. Rules for the park will be posted on the township’s website.
The dog park is part of a project that consists of revamping the baseball and softball fields, rehabilitating soccer fields, building a new pavilion and updating parking and pathways to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those projects will likely be completed this year.
According to Siko, the upper baseball field at the park will be overhauled, with improvements scheduled for the dugouts and the infield, as well as the installation of new fencing and benches. New lighting is being installed at baseball and softball fields by Iowa-based Musco Lighting.

A pavilion also is under construction, which includes new restrooms.
The projects are being funded largely through grants and money from the Hempfield Parks Fund.
The project is among several improvements that have taken place at the park over the past several years, the most recent being the planting of 45 trees at the park with the help of Hempfield Area School District students and the Seton Hill University men’s basketball team.
Other projects have included remodeling several pavilions at the park, opening a new amphitheater and revamping the Bill Mazeroski field. According to Siko, future projects include an inclusive playground that will be located near the amphitheater.
