Formed in September 2019, the Westmoreland Ballet Company has a new downtown Greensburg studio, where classes for dancers of all ages are offered.

The recently formed Westmoreland Ballet Company has moved into quarters in Greensburg’s downtown cultural district.

The organization’s mission is to provide “an inclusive, nurturing, professional ballet performing company and school with workforce development and higher education opportunities,” according to a release.

The space at 41 N. Main St., dating back to the 1880s, has been outfitted with premium flooring specifically designed for ballet, the release says.

Founded in September 2019, the company formerly offered classes at Stage Right’s Greensburg facilities and has performed outreach events at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Greensburg Hempfield Area Library and Caritas Christi, and had appearances in conjunction with Stage Right at Greensburg’s Palace Theater, Irwin’s Lamp Theater and Westmoreland County Community College.

“Think of the cultural scene of Greensburg as a puzzle with all these wonderful pieces: we have the professional symphony, the unique Palace Theater, Stage Right, our active museum, library and live music, universities book-ending it all, combined with a low cost of living to support artists and make their art accessible to everyone,” says artistic director Judy Tubbs. “The only missing piece is a professional ballet company. Westmoreland Ballet Company is here to fill that void.”

The nonprofit ballet company currently offers classes for all ages of dancers and is planning for an early-release high school program and dual enrollment for university credits.

Upcoming events include a March 1 ballet showcase and a March 20 grand opening gala.
