When Crissy Torres checked into Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, she certainly wasn’t expecting to be holding the first baby born in 2022 in the Allegheny Health Network.

That’s because she initially checked into the hospital four days ago.

But at 1:56 a.m. on New Year’s Day — and after labor complications that ultimately resulted in a Cesarean section — Torres and Matt Vigna of Harrison City welcomed a healthy baby boy, Kai Michael Vigna, into the world.

“We’ve been trying for over a year,” said Torres, 31. “We had a miscarriage, and then the week I found out I was pregnant with Kai, I was going to be starting on fertility medication.

“I just feel really blessed to be healthy and to have a family.”

The beginnings of Kai’s entry into the world also took place at Forbes Hospital.

“My husband was a medical technician in the lab at the time, and I still work in the ER,” Torres said. “Someone here introduced us, and we’ve been together since 2016.”

Allegheny Health Network officials said the family would receive a free year of diapers thanks to the Western PA Diaper Bank, as well as a birthday gift basket with comfort items.

Kai Vigna was 8 pounds, 1 ounce and 21 inches long at birth.

“I’m just really looking forward to being a parent,” Torres said.
